  DECEMBER 20, 2007
Dear liza,

The final numbers on tennis industry growth for 2007 won't be in for a few months, but already the year-in-review numbers are looking very strong. Research by the Tennis Industry Association, U.S. Tennis Association, Taylor Research, and Sports Marketing Surveys shows:

- Tennis participation grew to 25.1 million in 2007; it's the first time since 1999 that 25 million has been broken.
- Adult league programming jumped from 11.6 hours per week in 2005 to 13.3 hours per week in 2007

- Racquet shipments to retailers are up 37 percent and ball shipments are up 14 percent since 2003

- Youth racquet sales show the biggest gains with a 50 percent increase since 2003

The full results of this year's endeavors to grow the game will be released in April.

Enjoy the holidays, and best wishes for 2008!

 Kirk Anderson and QuickStart demo

One Saturday last month I got outed by a bunch of six-year-olds. Out-run. Out-skipped. Out-hopped. And I'm no kindergarten teacher or babysitter or teaching pro--just a writer who got run around a tennis court swinging a mini racquet, chasing foam balls, zig-zagging through cones, and jumping through hoops (literally!). I was one of a handful of press people--and a gander of very spirited kids--who tried QuickStart, a new play format that aims to make learning tennis easy and fun for kids aged 10 and under.

Tennis Goes Pop: Maria & Andre

Even during the miniscule "off-season," it's pretty easy to catch tennis stars. In fact, it's hard to avoid them. In addition to Andy Roddick, James Blake, Mardy Fish and others playing exhibitions for great causes, some top names are all over the media.

Maria and dolce for canon powershotMaria Sharapova, whose Canon PowerShot ads seem to be in constant rotation for the holiday shopping rush and in the finish of her three-year $6 million endorsement deal, makes her debut appearance Friday on The Ellen DeGeneres Show (click for broadcast schedule).

andre and steffi for louis vuittonIt's tough to keep up with all the print ads featuring Andre Agassi. Open Vanity Fair and you'll see him and Stefanie Graf lounging amid Louis Vuitton bags, and his Longines magazine ad slicks are open for bids on ebay. Both endorsement deals are tied into philanthropic endeavors: Louis Vuitton is supporting The Climate Project and Longines is supporting The Andre Agassi Foundation.
