Hi there,

The single-mindedness required to win multiple majors is staggering. The focus that top players muster in the heat of battle is absolutely amazing to watch. We witnessed Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer--two great champs who wildly respect each other--face off at Roland Garros. It ended up being a little more one-sided than fans would have liked, but these two regularly produce classic tug-of-wars that spectators love. And we might see it on grass.

The Wimbledon draw has not been completed yet, but Nadal's wins over Andy Roddick and Novak Djokovic for the Queen's Club victory on Sunday prove he's got what grass takes--and isn't too tired to compete.

It takes a lot of discipline to stay focused, especially late in a match. We see it in a player's eyes before striking a serve and in body language after a point. This unshakeable focus is the mark of champions and it's not reserved to tennis. David Brooks of The New York Times calls this "The Frozen Gaze" and his article today considers Tiger Woods' unshakeable focus on the last hole of the U.S. Open, which ended in sudden death in a rare Monday playoff against Rocco Mediate. The win is Woods' 14th major.

Another winner of 14 majors who displayed the single-mindedness that turns players into champions?

Pete Sampras.
In his new book, "A Champion's Mind," Sampras explains this mind-set that made him a legend (see "Must-reads for summer season" below).

Author, "AMERICAN DOUBLES ...the Trials ...the Triumphs ...the Domination"

Q. What's the outlook for American doubles?
A. The outlook is great! The Bryan brothers, who just turned 30 [on] April 28th, are not slowing down in any way. I think they have many more titles left in them...
