Hi there,
The U.S. Postal Service broke my mailbox. I'm not sure if it means a government agency has tampered with government property, but it certainly means there is too much junk mail to fit in the box. Yet my mail deliverer crammed it all in and broke the lock mechanism. Nice.
The USPS calls it third-class mail, but the rest of us call the (often unsolicited) pleas for money simply junk.
The good news is that we might see a shift down from the tons of snail mail we receive because online giving continues to increase, according to Philanthropy.com. It grew 37 percent to $1.2 billion in 2006, the most recent year for which data is available.
So, as more people switch to making donations with a few clicks, non-profits will likely put their fundraising efforts on the web. (Junk mail will go online, too, but law requires that recipients opt in for email; so, you do have control of what you receive.)
Tennis is following suit. Keep reading... |

| Sports follows philanthropy trends
Tennis has lots of worthy causes to help others play your favorite sport. Now it's easier than effort to help fund them. Here's a guide:
- NetworkForGood.org lists more than 900 tennis organizations seeking donations, most of them Community Tennis Associations. Go to the home page and search "tennis." You can donate directly from that website.
- USTA Tennis & Education Foundation, which helps at-risk and special needs youngsters achieve "educational excellent, good citizenship, and self-improvement." Lives are changed by this group's work. You can help for as little as $5.
- International Tennis Hall of Fame's auction site allows fans to win cool and exclusive experiences, while the proceeds help preserve the game and build the future through junior programs and other efforts. The lowest bid in the auction, which ends Feb. 29, is $300 for a Harmon Kardon stereo sound system.
The new frontier in philanthropy is cell phone donations. Sending dollars to an organization is as simple as texting a message to it. Click here for details.

| Five Questions with...Jon Muir |
|
| General Manager, Wilson Racquet Sports, and TIA Board Member
Q. You're calling from Hong Kong, after spending a few days at the Australian Open, where Wilson is the official ball and it appears that Roger Federer will swoop up another title. What's your take on tennis in the region?
Exposure for tennis is growing in the region with the Australian Open TV coverage and local countries looking to showcase more professional events. The governing bodies in Korea, Japan, and China are working to build a stronger infrastructure for growing the sport and I think they are looking at the strong impact the USTA and TIA have had in the U.S. as to how you can build long-term for the health of the sport.
