Go anywhere outside of the United States and you'll
see tennis in the sports pages and beyond. The
touring pros are real celebrities in their countries and,
for better or worse, the support of them at
tournaments is wild.
In these United States, though, tennis is buried if at
all present in the sports pages. But
the
tide is turning. The sport's fashions and
personages continue to seep into pop culture while
research shows that participation and ball sales
climb.
Keep reading to see how tennis
is going pop.

Sharapova's style backed by substance
full story at blog.tenniswire.org
By tennis standards, Maria Sharapova joined an "elite
group" at age 9 when she got a full scholarship to the
Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy, and signed her initial
endorsement deal with Nike by age 11.
But her ability to transcend tennis has been solidified
with Wednesday's appointment as a
Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations
Development Programme.
As the UN statement
says, "Maria Sharapova joins an elite group...which
includes soccer stars Ronaldo of Brazil, Zinédine
Zidane of France, and newly appointed Didier Drogba
of Cote d’Ivoire; Japanese actress Misako Konno; and
Crown Prince Haakon Magnus of Norway."
Sharapova's always put substance behind her style,
and tennis has benefited all along. Now, others will,
too.
