11/01/11 - CHICAGO -- Wilson Tour player and Wimbledon champion, Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic, won her first WTA Championships in Istanbul, Turkey, beating Victoria Azarenka of Belarus 7-5, 4-6, 6-3. Playing with the Wilson Tour BLX racket, Kvitova now has earned the number two world ranking.
Kvitova took a 5-0 lead in the first set, but Azarenka won the next five games. Kvitova converted her fifth set point when Azarenka's forehand went out. This was the first time Kvitova played in this tournament.
Kvitova began the 2011 season ranked number 34 in the world. She has won six tournaments this year, the same number as world number one Caroline Wozniacki and twice as many as Azarenka. She is the sixth Czech ever in the top ten (after Navratilova, Mandlikova, Sukova, Novotna, Vaidisova).
Her 2011 singles record includes Brisbane, Paris (indoor), Madrid, Wimbledon, and Linz, with an overall singles record of 58-13. She is the youngest player to win a Grand Slam since 2008, and is currently undefeated for indoor matches in 2011 (19-0).
“Petra embodies the true spirit of Wilson,” said Renaud Vallon, global tour director for Wilson. “She represents the next generation of tennis athletes. Not only is she a fighter, but she is also committed to being the best and knows what she has to do to win. We congratulate her on an outstanding year, especially at such a young age, and look forward to our continued partnership.”
