05/03/06 - New York, NY--The home courts of the 12 World TeamTennis teams will sport a colorful new look and competitive feel when the 2006 WTT Professional League season opens this July and play begins on specially designed, multi-colored courts featuring a DecoTurf court system created for WTT by DecoSystems.
As part of the new court plans, DecoTurf will be the Official Court Surface of World TeamTennis. DecoSystems, a division of California Products Corporation, is a leading supplier of 100% acrylic sport surface systems in the world. The unique, “new again” multicolored court design is a return to the courts popularized by WTT during the 1970s. The calico pattern features a patchwork of colors including blue, green, brown and maroon.
“We brought the multi-colored court back for last year’s WTT Finals and received rave reviews from the fans and the players,” said Jason Spitz, WTT Vice President of Marketing. “For 2006 we have taken the process even further than just the look of the courts and will provide a consistent, competitive DecoTurf surface for all WTT matches. DecoTurf is truly the industry leader in court design and we are pleased to have them involved in World TeamTennis.”
The 12 WTT teams play in both permanent and temporary facilities. Each court will require approximately 300 gallons of acrylic coatings to create the unique WTT look.
“Each year professional tennis players play more matches on DecoTurf than any other cushion tennis surface,” said John Graham, DecoSystems managing director. “The unique surfaces we have created for WTT are an exciting combination of a great look from the past and today’s most precise competitive tennis surface.”
Now in its 31st year of play, World TeamTennis is well known for introducing innovative elements to tennis. Instant replay, which debuted at WTT matches in 2005 as the WTT Coaches Challenge and marked the first time the technology had been used in a professional tennis match, will return to select WTT matches in 2006. Other WTT firsts include co-ed format, cumulative and no-ad scoring, on-court coaching, Supertiebreakers, multi-colored courts and player names on back of their shirts.
The unique gender-balanced team concept for WTT was created in the early 70s by League co-founders Billie Jean King and Larry King. The format used for a WTT Pro League match features teams comprised of two men, two women and a coach. Each match consists of five sets, with one set each of men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles.
Advanta is the presenting sponsor of the WTT Pro League and the official business credit card of World TeamTennis.
Official WTT Pro League sponsors also include Gatorade, Geico and Wilson Racquet Sports.
