12/29/06 - James Hunt of Orlando, Fla. was recently named the chairman of special populations for the United States Professional Tennis Association by Ron Woods, USPTA president. The goal of the position is to introduce tennis to special populations.
Hunt has been a member of the USPTA for 25 years and holds a Pro 1 certification. In his role, he hopes to get the USPTA and its members involved in taking tennis to both the Special Olympics and special populations. He plans to do this by recruiting a volunteer in every state to disseminate information and spearhead the effort to help members recruit or get involved with these special groups at a local level.
Hunt has an extensive background working with the Special Olympics. He was previously in charge of special populations for the USTA Southern Section. While in the position, he built up tennis involvement with special populations in seven states. Special populations may include people with physical, developmental, mental and/or environmental challenges.
“I’ve personally started and run many of these (special population tennis programs) in the Atlanta area and it is my honest desire to help anyone, especially USPTA members, start and run similar programs in their areas,” said Hunt.
Hunt is currently an independent teaching professional in the Orlando area and teaches at several facilities.
Members interested in volunteering should contact James Hunt at (407) 924-7505 or via e-mail at jamihunt@localnet.com.
